Dr. Steve and Julie Lutz
Dr. Stephen and Julia Lutz have served in Papua New Guinea since 1986. Steve is a medical missionary at Immanuel Lutheran Hospital in Enga Province, as a general doctor as well as a surgeon. He treats every kind of illness and injury imaginable. He also conducts medical patrols to people living in remote areas of Papua New Guinea, offering medical care, vaccinations and hygiene education. He does radio consultations for remote people and arranges medical evacuation.
Steve serves on the mission committee for the Gutnius
Lutheran Church in Papua, New Guinea, and is the medical equipment trouble
shooter. He encourages PNG Christians in their faith life in a culture where
tribal fighting, domestic violence, payback
and changes are realities that
affect everyone.
Steve was born in Angelical, India, to Missionaries Arnold and Juanita Lutz. He attended school in India through high school. He graduated from Concordia College, Ann Arbor, MI, and Concordia Teachers College, Seward, NE, with a Bachelor of Science degree in education in 1972. In 1977, he graduated from the Medical College of Ohio at Toledo and spent a year there as a teaching associate. Then in 1983, he completed a five year surgical residency training program at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, Iowa City, IA. He was a staff surgeon for three years in Muscatine, IA, before accepting his present commission.
Julie (Behrens) is from Alexandria, VA. She received a degree in education from Concordia Teachers College, Seward, NE. She taught at Detroit Urban Lutheran School at Zion Lutheran School, Corvalias, OR. Besides being a homemaker, Julie is a part-time teacher of basic study courses at Timothy Lutheran Seminary, a bus driver and a correspondent.
The Lutz's would like you to pray for the strengthening of the Gutnius Lutheran Church in its mission vision and the proclamation of the Word in the face of difficulties within the church's leadership and in addressing numerous sects outside the church, as well as for their own challenge of choosing priorities each day.
